AMELIA EARHART

Productions by: Seattle Children's Theatre; California Theatre Center; video production by Cal State, East Bay Theatre Department

Amelia is on her first great flight -- solo across the Atlantic. Her tiny cockpit becomes filled with specters of memory and she relives scenes from her life, scenes which challenge her right to fame and her ability as a pilot. The flight succeeds and Amelia's dream becomes possessed by Mary B, a young girl to whom the flights of Amelia Earhart represent power, freedom, and the fulfillment of the deepest yearnings of her young heart. The early history of plane flight, the alcoholism of Amelia's father, the manufacture and pressure of fame, and the neverending need for courage are the themes of this play. This is a challenging play meant to be performed by older actors, (high shcool at least) for all audiences.
