THE JOURNEY OF LEWIS AND CLARK

Thomas Jefferson plans a great trek across the North American continent and the adventure begins. The two commanders, Clark's slave, Ben York, and other members of the "Corps of Discovery", tell of the hardships and splendid visions of this 3000 mile wilderness journey. After a near deadly encounter with the Teton Sioux, the explorers are joined by French translator, Toussaint Charbonneau, his Shoshone bride, Sacagawea, and their infant son, Baptist. This unlikely party obtains horses from the Shoshone Nation, and manages to cross the Rocky Mountains, just as winter and certain starvation come down upon them. At a time when the rest of the United States had given them up for dead, these explorers reach the Pacific shore. The play is an epic which shows the courage of these American explorers and the sense of wonder they felt on one of the most astonishing journeys in history.
